I wore this Coyotes Kachina cap every day of the trip. It has a deep purple crown and a forest green brim- my former favorite color and current favorite color. Even I write this, I have it on. It was a gift from my friend Richie, who I’d only heard of before my senior year but turned in to one of my closest friends. A few weeks before we graduated from Missouri, there was a party at his house. I’d worn a Diamondbacks (Dbacks) hat in an effort to get in the spirit of Arizona, something I was excited but nervous about. “I have a Coyotes hat that I’ve like never worn, do you wanna have it?” he said. “Sure,” I responded. He jumped up from his seat on the porch and went inside to get it. “The brim is crooked and off-center, but otherwise its good,” he said as he walked back outside. I took off my Dbacks hat and put on the Coyotes hat. Sure, it was a factory defect, but there was something about that hat that felt more comfortable than the Dbacks cap. The cultural nod to the Hopi Tribe, one of the largerst indigenous nations in Arizona, the color combination, the fact that just a week or so before the team had been relocated. It all worked. So thank you, Richie, for giving me this cap.
