While the death was ruled a suicide by the sheriff, Lewis believes an altercation with a white man and his son the week before played a part in his death and that foul play was involved. High winds and low humidity left the surrounding area prone to the flames. In total, over 3,000 acres of land were taken by the fire. The entrance of the church was burned in the fire. No casualties were reported.
